I love Moon’s TWITTER. It gets the whole big wonderful ball of her. She’s a rebel yogi, an author, actress, artist, Mom, daughter, yes also the proto valley girl – and all of it oh so sweet and sour funny. She recently made a much talked about appearance on MARC MARON’S WTF PODCAST. I love her rants and stories at UnCab. Plus she is always so Boho Chic.
I sat with DREW DROEGE at Alec Mapa’s Baby Daddy, where I learned the he “doesn’t much care for popcorn.” Shocking! Less shocking…The fact that Drew was recently a cover boy on Frontiers Magazine, is currently starring in NOT LOOKING, and has a NY Magazine Aprroval Matrixed PODCAST, GLITTER IN THE GARBAGE. If you know him best as Chloe Sevigny, do yourself a favor and see Drew as Drew. You’ll pop your corn!
MISSI PYLE puts the on in blonde! You’ve seen HER in a gazillion great things including THE ARTIST, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, INSIDE AMY SCHUMER, THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM and FRIENDS. She sings, she shines, she stories and she just Pyles the joy quite high. Missi was nominated for an MTV Award for Best Fight for her knock-down drag-out with QUEEN LATIFAH. Missi started her career out SINGING and she will be HAPPILY DOING JUST THAT, and generally being on on Sunday!
TIM BAGLEY has been telling on himself at UnCab since our days at Luna Park. He came to us with an insanely talented pack of Groundlings including Judy Toll, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin and Mike McDonald. You’ve seen him act his pants off, sometimes literally, on everything from MONK to CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM to WILL & GRACE. He recently got into it with us on our podcast UNCABARET UNSTAGED on which he talked about, among other things, his show “Clean Boy, Dirty Stories” about his time as a butler at the Playboy Mansion. Oh Tim!
His new Comedy Central Special is called MATT BRAUNGER:SHOVEL FIGHTER but he is not a shovel fighter! He is a shovel lover! His Nerdist podcast is called DING DONGER. And I’m guessing that is pretty accurate. You may recognize him from his funny boy appearances on CHELSEA LATELY, LETTERMAN and CONAN.
MAK GRGIC is a young virtuoso guitar player. Straight out of USC his debut album CINEMA VERISIMO is filled with the magical music of post-WW2 Hollywood. THE WASHINGTON POST calls him a “LYRICAL, INSIGHTFUL PLAYER.”

Yesterday was the first day of Spring!!! Yay. I really try to love winter but it’s hard. Even here in sunny Southern California. The light is less and there is an aura about winter. There is a stuckness. In spring things start to move. Happen. One thing and then another. And so it makes sense that the first day of spring is also World Storytelling Day! We love the world. We love stories. We love days. But we especially love our story filled Sunday nights at First and Hope. Look “I” turned into “we”, that’s how awesome spring is!
This Sunday 3/23 celebrate the beginning of Spring at UnCabaret!
Our friend Claudia Lonow (Rude Awakening, How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest of Your Life), Knots Landing) makes her UnCab debut alongside alt comedy UnCab faves Byron Bowers, Karen Kilgariff — both of whom just returned from SXSW — this year’s Outfest Fusion award winner Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty, Tonight Show, Desperate Housewives, Babydaddy) and Kira Soltanovich (Tonight Show). Plus we’ll have music from the seven-octave-singing Timur, and Daniel, of Timur and The Dime Museum.

Beth Lapides’ acclaimed creative workshop helps you shape your unique comedic perspective and zero in on the projects that most suit it.
The Comedian’s Way is a wildly effective method for creating new material for stand-up, one-person shows, spoken word, memoirs, storytelling, talks and developing skills for pitching, auditioning and in general being a funnier and more authentic version of yourself.
It’s a life changing, enlightening environment in which to take creative risks. The Comedian’s Way helps you get unstuck, sort through creative overwhelm, understand your own story, get successful at the work that means the most to you.
Comedy writing and performance skills are something everyone, or at least everyone living in Los Angeles needs. Students range from stand-ups tired of stale material and wanting to reinvent themselves, to comedy writers on shows not happy with their pitching in the room, to meditation teachers working on memoirs, to monologists breaking in new material, to actors wanting to be better on their feet in auditions.
Students have sold TV show, booked parts, produced shows, gone on to tour, win awards, be happier. Almost every student has come away with a greater understanding of themselves, and having had fun.
Many almost embarrassingly good testimonials here.
The Comedian’s Way is obviously a riff on Julia Cameron’s ‘The Artist’s Way’, which so many have found helpful. In that system there are many senses that the artist recovers, but oddly none of those senses are the sense of humor.
Beth calls the sense of humor the seventh sense. And it is as key to a fully experienced life as the other more obvious ones.
Developing your sense of humor means developing your lightness.
Developing your sense of humor is especially key for creatives whether they are comedians or not. All the sensitivity to the darker parts of life, pain, tragedy, confusion, worry, sadness etc that goes to make great art needs to be able to be converted. The saying goes – pain + time = comedy. But it requires skill, not just passive waiting, to make that conversion.
In this workshop, Beth leads students through the process of learning those techniques, and of understand the big story of your life. Beth teaches comedy from the point of view of helping you get more solidly in the moment.
Lots of students have said it was more effective and fun and cheaper than therapy, but this is a class truly designed to help in the work process. The therapeutic benefits are a total bonus!
