THE COMEDIAN'S WAY (aka The Un-Cab Lab) is one of the most wildly-effective comedy classes in LA for developing your authentic original comedy voice and point-of-view.
Beth Lapides and Greg Miller have developed a uniquely original page-to-stage method for writing & performance (and self-discovery) based on their ground-breaking work at Un-Cabaret.
Before Julia Sweeney created "God Said Ha!" and "Letting Go of God"...
Before Michael Patrick King wrote and directed "Sex and the City"...
Before Margaret Cho created "I'm the One That I Want" and "Notorious C.H.O"...
Before Bob Odenkirk and David Cross created "Mr. Show"...
Before Kathy Griffin got on the D-List...
Before Larry Charles directed "Curb Your Enthusiasm", or "Borat"...
Before Laura Kightlinger created "The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman"...
Before Greg Behrendt wrote "He's Just Not That Into You"...
Before Jeff Garlin produced and co-starred in "Curb Your Enthusiasm"...
Before Janeane Garofalo was on Air America...
Before Judd Apatow wrote & directed "Knocked Up", "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Funny People"...
They all came to Beth Lapides' Un-Cabaret to find their authentic voice and turn their pain into comedy. Now you too can find your funniest and deepest material.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS AT THE LAB? At the beginning of each class Beth & Greg answer your questions and Beth talks about an issue she's dealing with in her work and how you can apply the concepts, exercises, techniques, strategies and technologies to your work. Past topics have included Being Present, Other Characters, Alternative Story Structure, Your Creative Toolkit, Beginnings, Stagecraft, Getting Press, etc.
Then each student gets onstage and presents their material (spoken, read or conversationally). Then Beth & Greg give you detailed notes, including specific lines or chunks that worked and why, things that didn't work so well and why, suggestions and assignments for developing your work to the next level and advice about how you (and the project) fit into the artistic community and the marketplace.
OUR STUDENTS ARE A MOTIVATED AND ECLECTIC GROUP. The workshop is a mixed-level class that usually includes both working professionals and ambitious beginners. We've worked with TV showrunners, produced screenwriters, published authors, professional actors and standups, teachers and attorneys, plus many people who have never been onstage before. There is a sense of community and shared purpose among our current and former students. Many have formed working relationships in the Lab and gone on to work together, including shows like the Jumping Off Point and the monthly Un-Cab Lab Show, which is available to all current and former students. More about our students and alumns.
