Beth Lapides’ acclaimed creative workshop helps you shape your unique comedic perspective and zero in on the projects that most suit it.
The Comedian’s Way is a wildly effective method for creating new material for stand-up, one-person shows, spoken word, memoirs, storytelling, talks and developing skills for pitching, auditioning and in general being a funnier and more authentic version of yourself.
It’s a life changing, enlightening environment in which to take creative risks. The Comedian’s Way helps you get unstuck, sort through creative overwhelm, understand your own story, get successful at the work that means the most to you.
Comedy writing and performance skills are something everyone, or at least everyone living in Los Angeles needs. Students range from stand-ups tired of stale material and wanting to reinvent themselves, to comedy writers on shows not happy with their pitching in the room, to meditation teachers working on memoirs, to monologists breaking in new material, to actors wanting to be better on their feet in auditions.
Students have sold TV show, booked parts, produced shows, gone on to tour, win awards, be happier. Almost every student has come away with a greater understanding of themselves, and having had fun.
Many almost embarrassingly good testimonials here.
The Comedian’s Way is obviously a riff on Julia Cameron’s ‘The Artist’s Way’, which so many have found helpful. In that system there are many senses that the artist recovers, but oddly none of those senses are the sense of humor.
Beth calls the sense of humor the seventh sense. And it is as key to a fully experienced life as the other more obvious ones.
Developing your sense of humor means developing your lightness.
Developing your sense of humor is especially key for creatives whether they are comedians or not. All the sensitivity to the darker parts of life, pain, tragedy, confusion, worry, sadness etc that goes to make great art needs to be able to be converted. The saying goes – pain + time = comedy. But it requires skill, not just passive waiting, to make that conversion.
In this workshop, Beth leads students through the process of learning those techniques, and of understand the big story of your life. Beth teaches comedy from the point of view of helping you get more solidly in the moment.
Lots of students have said it was more effective and fun and cheaper than therapy, but this is a class truly designed to help in the work process. The therapeutic benefits are a total bonus!
